واژه complacent از لحاظ نوشتاری و تلفظی و همچنین شکل ظاهری و همچنین معنایی(تاحدودی) شبیه کلمه complement است. معنی complement یعنی کامل بودن، تمام و کمال بودن. در واقع complement یکی از مشتقهای complete می باشد. در مورد وجه تسمیه واژه complacent با واژه های complement و complete نزد انگلیسی زبان ها نمی توان اظهار نظر قطعی نمود. اما می می توان گفت که احتمالا جون فرد دارای خصلت complacent(خودبین، ازخودراضی یا مغرور) پیش خود فکر می کند که چون از همه لحاظ complete(تمام و کمال) است، لذا به همین خاطر دچار خودبینی و عرور می شود.
